As a franchise, Persona is an emotionally significant game for so many. What does this character mean to you? More than why do you want to write as them, but why are they special to you?
I'm not gonna lie, I have a huge soft spot for punk-ass boys with a wholesome heart. When I first played Persona 4, Kanji was my immediate favorite. There's a lot I can go on about regarding his characterization (please see the next question below for that!), but Kanji's dungeon and social link really endeared him to me. Having layers and parts of yourself that you do not know how to express or share with others; being labeled but learning to be true to who you are deep down. Supporting the others on the IT to do that for themselves as well. Sure he's got his hang-ups, and yeaaah he's really good at appearing so large and intimidating, but he's actually a total softy who will go to bat for his friends. Dang, I love that so much about Kanji. And his feelings for Naoto are A+.
If there was something you could change about your character in-game. What would it be and why?
Kanji's sexuality as tied to the narration of the game I feel is a bit lacking. Of course he did ultimately face his shadow, accepting it as a part of himself, but he still seems to backtrack quite a bit during the course of the game. Whether it was truly Atlus's intention or not (I know it's controversial so I'm not really gonna go in depth) to dance over the topic, I feel it could've been handled a little better.

He couldn't believe this.
That old wench had always tried to push him into doing this sort of thing—his good ol' ma— damn it, this was just like her!
The shopping district was bustling with nattering old ladies and high school girls, the droves of people browsing the makeshift stalls that dotted the sidewalks. Inaba's first and very own craft fair. Hand-made jewelry, caricatures, shrine souvenirs, hell even paintings if you looked hard enough, were all on sale and available for the eye to see. And right there in front of Tatsumi Textiles, stood the one person who probably looked the most out of place. Towering over the majority of his customers, Kanji's imposing figure and presence was somehow tamed by the army of stupidly adorable plush toys lining the shelf before him.
'Sell your stuff, Kanji,' she said. 'You're so skilled, everyone will love anything you make!', she downright insisted. Well th'hell was his mom now?!
He was trying his best to keep his cool, even when he was suddenly mobbed by a group of mothers and their excited children. Fighting to stifle the sudden wave of anxiety all while he watched them pick up the stuffed animals and wave them around. Not even seeming to give it a second thought that it was the thug-like young man who poured his heart into sewing each one.
Shit, should he have made more just in case...? What if he sells out? H—he'd just have to promise custom orders. Or something.
Why did that idea excite him so much?
“Aaaahh!! It's just so cute!” A girl cried out, hugging one of the sickeningly cute pink alligators to her chest, “It looks just like it does in the story!” The girl's eyes fluttered up to Kanji, “Excuse me...”
“Yea, what is it?” His brusque voice left a lot to be desired, but she didn't seem too intimidated as she smiled, “Did you make all of these yourself?”
Hell no! Why would ya get that sorta idea?! That's what the old him would have said, anyway. And he couldn't lie that it made him nervous as hell to even look her in the eye as denial made its attempt to claw its way up his throat. He tensed, some heat rose to his cheeks, and jeez—when did his palms get so sweaty?
Denying it probably would've been easier, but that just wasn't the kinda guy Kanji was anymore. He made a promise, and something so small wasn't even going to come close to having him break it. His friends might as well have been standing there in the crowd, finding strength in the collective memories he shared with them during that crazy-ass year.
“Yea, I made 'em all,” he admitted, a confession which caused all of his customers to come to a screeching stand-still. Suddenly, he was the center of attention, and it just about made the hairs stand up on the back of his neck. He was so sure he already knew what they were thinking. That this was all some pretty girly shit, not something a man or a guy like him should be doing. Well, screw them. Screw it all. Did he look like a girl to them?!
And just when he felt himself puffing up preemptively in his own defense, that was when he was bombarded by the damnedest thing... a chorus of requests and questions:
“Can you make me a rabbit? My friend absolutely needs one for her birthday!”
“Can you teach me how to sew like you?”
“How do you make them look so precious?”
Dumbstruck, Kanji stammered as he took a step back, "L-look it's nothing special.. I don't..." Thank god, before he made a total ass of himself, he was saved by the cheery voice of his mother from over his shoulder: “My boy'd love to take requests, isn't that right dear?”
He flashed her a look of anger which only earned him one of her knowing smiles.
Honestly...?
This was just the kind of soft shit he lived for.
